The raw materials used in the construction of doors determine the quality of doors.
The following five materials need to be considered for understanding door quality.
- Wood
- Veneer
- Laminate
- Plywood
- Polish
Let’s discuss each of them in detail.
1. Wood: There are numerous varieties of wood available. However, depending upon your budget and taste, you can choose the one that suits you best.
The most popular varieties of wood in India include Teak wood, Deodar wood, Shisham, Oak, Sal wood and Beech. Doors made of Wood are durable and easy to repair in terms of dents, strains and scratches.
2. Veneers: Veneer doors are formed by gluing together thin slices of wood. They boast of superior aesthetics and offer design possibilities. Veneers are environmentally-friendly as 40 sheets of veneer can be made out of one solid wood board. Veneer doors are resistant to seasonal movement, splitting and warp.
3. Plywood: Plywood is a sheet material made from thin layers of wood veneer glued together. The type of adhesive used determines the durability of plywood.
There are various types of plywood namely, Softwood Plywood, Hardwood Plywood, Tropical Plywood, Decorative Plywood, Flexible Plywood and Marine Plywood among others. Being lightweight yet durable, plywood is convenient for door construction.
4. Laminate: Laminate is an artificial decorative material used to cover the surface of substrate. Based on the making, there are two types of laminates, High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) & Low Pressure Laminate (LPL).
HPL is recommended for long term use. LPL is used for vertical surfaces of low impact. It is also referred to as Melamine boards or direct pressure laminate. On the basis of its property, there are different types of laminates namely fire-resistant, chemical-resistant, impact-resistant and wear-resistant. Since laminates are weather and scratch resistant so they are used in kitchen cabinets and wardrobes.
5. Polish: The choice of finish for veneer or wood is an important decision for homeowners. Finishes are categorized into Evaporative and Reactive finishes. Evaporative finishes include lacquers, water-based finishes and shellacs which evaporate off the surface leaving a dry film. Reactive finishes include oils, varnishes and catalysed lacquers. Reactive finishes are more durable and can tolerate moisture and heat better than Evaporative finishes.
All the above materials determine the quality of the door and help you to evaluate its longevity and durability. If you wish to check out the exclusive collection of doors from Durian, please visit http://duriandoors.in/
